Vertical doors change the way a 2000-2006 Chevrolet Suburban carries itself. Instead of swinging out into the next parking space, each front door pivots forward and rises straight up, which is hard to miss on an SUV this size. This kit from Vertical Doors Inc., part number VDCCHEVYSUB0006, fits every trim of the Suburban across the 2000 through 2006 model years.

The hinges mount to the Suburban’s factory bolt pattern, so this is a bolt-on conversion, though some drilling and tapping is part of the job. It is also reversible, meaning you can return the doors to their stock swing later if you want. The hinges are made in the USA from hardened domestic steel and the design is patented here as well. An instruction manual comes with the kit, and we recommend having a professional installer work through it rather than learning on your own doors. One thing to know before ordering: truck and SUV kits are non-refundable and non-exchangeable, so double-check that your Suburban falls in the 2000-2006 range first.

The door first swings out on the vertical pin, then lifts on the round bearing hub, and the gas shock holds it up: the two-stage motion in VDI's patent (US 6,845,547). Each kit has right and left hinge assemblies, two gas shocks, M8 bolts with washers, shoulder bolts and pins (VDI install manuals); set screw #2 and nut #1 adjust where the door closes. A typical kit, drawn from VDI's Crossfire manual: the plate, arm, brackets, shock and angles differ by vehicle, and each kit is made for its car.
